Lionel Messi - World Cup or Five Ballon d'Or?

Barcelona star Lionel Messi was awarded the best player trophy last Monday, for a record 5th time, beating the current holder Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as his Barcelona teammate Neymar Jr.
Messi was the favourite to win the award as he had a prominent role in his team's treble success last season.

Meanwhile the Argentine striker has admitted that he would swap his five Ballon d'Or trophies for the World Cup. He said that he is more happy in his team's success than his own.

Despite getting a gold medal in 2008 Olympics at Beijing, Argentina was beaten 1-0 by a strong German side in the last World Cup final in Brazil. Fortune did not favour them next time as well as Chile beat them on penalties in the Copa America, the following year after the World Cup

It was reported that the Brazilian footballer allegedly involved in a brawl near the tunnel with FC Goa co-owner Dattaraj Salgaocar. Salgaocar filed an FIR against Elano, claiming that the footballer assaulted him verbally and physically. The complaint filed against Elano were under Indian Penal Code sections 323-voluntarily causing hurt, 341-wrongful restraint, and 504-intentional insult with the intent to cause breach of peace.

However, even though these offences are bailable, the Chennayin FC appointed lawyer Rajeev Gomes said that the police demanded passport from the player, which is not a requirement for bailable offences.

Elano was questioned for two hours at the police station and was released after a judge set bail.
"The Respondent shall release the applicant, herewith, if offences alleged are bailable upon turning bail bond to the satisfaction of the investigation officer," stated the Judge.

Sources say, the 34-year old midfielder allegedly pushed the FC Goa co-owner at the dugout after the match, moments before the push turned into a brawl inside the tunnel.

Meanwhile, FC Goa boycotted the post-match functions and were absent even from receiving their runners-up medal.
The Hindu quotes Goan Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar:
"I left the stadium when, apart from the poor refereeing, I noticed the Chennaiyin FC captain insulting, abusing, and assaulting Mr. Salgaocar. I did not find it worthwhile to even wait for the prize distribution function."

Chelsea FC sack their boss Jose Mourinho after a board meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
The Portuguese manager was going through the toughest and disastrous time of his managerial career as his team lost 9 out of 16 matches, this season, sitting on 16th in the Premier League table. The defending champions won the league last year by 8 points and won the league cup, but this time they were kicked out of the League Cup by Stoke City in the round of 16 and are struggling for the 4th place, which Mourinho said to be "Impossible".
Surprisingly, the London club have entered the knockouts of the Champions League as group winners, and will face the French champions Paris St-Germain in February and March.
Chelsea's last defeat was in the Premier League at Leicester City by 2 goals to 1 last monday.

Jose Mourinho took charge in 2013 June, his second spell at Chelsea after 2004, and has won three league titles, FA Cup, Community Shield, and three League Cups, making him the most successful manager of Chelsea in their 110-year history. The 52-year-old was under scrutiny after a poor start to the season, their worst in many years time.

In a statement released by Chelsea, it is said that:
"Both Jose and the board agreed results have not been up to the mark this season and believe it is in the best interests of both parties to go our separate ways."

While players like Costa, Fabregas, Willian, Matic, Oscar, and hazard were key in their successive campaign last season, they were seen deliver below par performance this time around. Chelsea's loss at Leicester last Monday proved to be the turning point for the 'special one'. He said later in the interview that Chelsea, at the moment, are in a zone where he feels 'ashamed'. He added that, just because they are at the relegation zone in the moment does not mean that they are in the relegation battle.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola are the possible replacements for Jose Mourinho in the summer. Both managers are not interested to leave their respected clubs midway this season.
Meanwhile Brendan Rodgers, Juande Ramos, and Guus Hiddink are the possible interim managers.

Manchester United: The Irrational Philosophy?

  • Late goal by Naldo sinks Manchester United
  • Manchester United dumped into the Europa League
  • Louis van Gaal and his bizarre decisions surprised the observers
  • Wins for PSG, Real Madrid, PSV, Atletico Madrid,  Manchester City, and, Sevilla

English Football giants Manchester United were kicked out of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night as the German side Wolfsburg beat them by 3 goals to 2 on what appeared to be a 'entertaining, but in vain' game. Despite spending around £250million on players in the last three transfer windows, the English team were dropped to the UEFA Europa League after yesterday's loss. Manchester United had to win over Wolfsburg to secure a top place finish in the group, and a draw would have got them a second place if a win for CSKA Moscow against  PSV Eindhoven had happened.

United took the lead after 10 minutes when the young striker Anthony Martial scored from a through ball from Juan Mata. The Wolves equalized few minutes later with Naldo. Wolfsburg''s Vieirinha scored in the 28th minute to give Wolfsburg the lead.
FULL TIME: 3-2 The Wolves qualify to the knockout stages and The Red Devils dump into the Europa League.

An entertaining first half for the Reds ends.
A cornerkick for United in 82 minute made the difference for Manchester United. An ongoal from Wolfsburg's Guilavogui equalized for United leaving the stadium shocked. At that point of time, United could have qualified, because CSKA Moscow was tied with PSV Eindhoven at Netherlands. Another corner kick after two minutes, this time for the home team, made THE crucial breakthrough when Wolfsburg were awarded a corner kick. An out-swung ball from the corner found Naldo's head and found the goal in the result.

United manager Louis van Gaal has been heavily criticized for his defense-minded, slow pace strategies. He was even booed by the Manchester United supporters last week following their 0-0 draw against West Ham United. Though they played one of their entertaining games of the season, the Reds had to leave the pitch in dismay.
The 22 year old Uruguayan International Guillermo Varela started as right back ahead of England's Ashley Young. When Matteo Darmian was injured in the 43rd minute, the inexperienced 18-year-old Borthwick Jackson, who was playing his second senior appearance, was brought on. Desperate for an important goal, Nick Powell, whose last match for United was against MK Dons in a 4-0 loss in August 2014, and Michael Carrick were brought on in the 69th minute for the two World Cup winners Juan Mata and Bastian Schweinsteiger respectively. The Dutchman's bizarre decision making was a thunderbolt for many game observers.

Meanwhile Louis van Gaal,in the post-match interview, has said that the team are better than last year, because reaching the group stage, progressing further in the Capital One Cup and sitting 3 points behind the leaders in the Premier League, etc. are signs of their improvement.
There have been too much negative impression from the pundits' side, where not everyone, even the majority United supporters are pleased with his defense-minded play strategy.
The only possible way the Dutchman can prove the critics wrong and hold his position in the club is to win the Premier League, which United last did in 2012-13 season under Sir Alex Ferguson.
In other matches, PSG, Real Madrid, PSV, Atletico Madrid,  Manchester City, and, Sevilla won and progressed to the next round.
